Prince William marries Kate Middleton (Catherine)

Hundreds of millions around the world watched as Prince William and Kate Middleton exchanged vows to become the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Kate (Catherine) wore a white fitted dress with long French Chantilly lace sleeves, and a train that stretched for 2.7 metres by designer Sarah Burton, and carried a shield-shaped wired bouquet of myrtle, lily-of-the-valley, sweet William and hyacinth. Kate wore her hair down and her long veil was held in place by a Cartier halo tiara, lent to her by the Queen; which was made by Cartier in 1936 and was presented to the Queen by her mother (Queen Mother) as an 18th birthday present.

Prince William, 28, wore a red tunic of the Irish Guard Colonel; his highest honorary appointment.

The venue was Westminster Abbey; where the funeral service for Princess Diana was held almost 14 years ago in 1997.

As you would expect it was a 'who's who' celebrity turn out, with invited guests including Australian swimming star Ian Thorpe, David and Victoria Beckham, Socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish, plus Prime Ministers, Kings, Queens and Sultan's from around the world made up the guest list of 1,900.

It was like the gods themselves had conspired to create perfect weather for the event, allowing an estimated 600,000 people to line the streets from Buckingham Palace to the abbey and watch the procession of Rolls Royce's in comfort.

Then the moment everyone was waiting for Catherine, 29, arrives in Queen Elizabeth's custom Rolls Royce limousine, known as the Phantom VI, to become a royal and begin life as a Princess marrying her Prince.

The wedding vowels were traditional; dating back to 1928, so Catherine did not say obey, but did say 'for richer' 'for poorer'; it made me laugh anyway.

Cheers from the crowd outside could be heard throughout the service, letting us all know that this was more than a wedding of two people, definitely breathing new life into the monarchy; we were all probably witnessing the marriage of the future King and Queen.

With bells ringing, people cheering, and wall to wall Union Jack flags waving, the Royal couple make their way through the streets of London from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace in their open carriage.

Finally, in front of the thousands gathered outside Buckingham Palace, the couple come out onto the balcony, and had that much anticipated kiss; with the crowd deafening the sound of fighter jets above with screams of delight.

A fairy tale wedding between a Prince and the love of his life ends, as they get ready for the formal party to follow, and signals the start of street parties all over Britain, and the world.

Prince Harry; later on in the day lived up to larrikin persona, standing on a table to deliver his best man's speech for the "Dude (referring to his brother Prince William) and Duchess".

Prince Harry, 26, known for his jocular antics, had the 300 guests in stitches with tears of laughter, referring often to William as a `dude', saying he had sympathy for beautiful Catherine having married a bald man.

One guest reported afterwards that Prince Harry said "William was actually an all-right bloke but not as good looking as he was...,".

Prince Harry's best man's speech also drew tears of sorrow from Kate and William. Harry said he "loved having a `sister' and that he cherished Kate as they have become so close..."and went on to say how much his mum "would have been proud of them both."

Kate's father Michael Middleton not to be out done, also had the guests laughing saying:

"I knew things were getting serious when I found a helicopter in my garden. I thought... Gosh, he must like my daughter."

The after wedding party; featuring Aberdeen Angus beef fillet and Welsh lamb as part of Swiss chef Anton Mosimann's carefully considered banquet, kicked on to about 3am.

The newlywed couple fare welled their guests after the final song - The Beatles' She Loves You', before being driven away in a vintage convertible Fiat 500.

The couple have announced they will not honeymoon immediately, with Prince William instead returning to work as a search and rescue helicopter pilot.

Speculation is mounting that part of the honeymoon will be spent in Australia.
