On Wednesday 20 April 2011, Detectives from the Sexual Crime Investigation Branch arrested a 38-year-old man from the North-Eastern suburbs at his home address in relation to child exploitation offences.

The following offences include:

  • Possession of Child Pornography
  • Possession of Child Pornography (aggravated)
  • Take Steps to Access Child Pornography (x2)

The man was charged at the City Watch House and released on police bail.

He is to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on 20 May 2011.

The investigation is continuing.

The arrest is the result of ongoing Sexual Crime Investigation Branch investigation 'Operation Decimate' which targets offenders who use the internet for child exploitation related offences.

Operation Decimate is an ongoing initiative of SAPOL's Sexual Crime Investigation Branch.

The Operation began in February 2007 and has resulted in the detection and arrest of people in both South Australia and other Australian jurisdictions who have accessed child exploitation material.

In addition to this, SCIB detectives have disseminated information to at least sixteen jurisdictions around the world where offending has been identified.

There are currently fifteen active investigations relating to Operation Decimate which include a number of matters that have been referred interstate.

The Operation uses sophisticated technology which tracks those who attempt to access web sites containing child exploitation material.

The operation also involves the cooperation of administrators of various overseas-based internet web forums.

The ultimate aim of Operation Decimate is to protect children.

The Operation has been extremely effective in identifying those people who attempt to access and trade child exploitation material via the internet.

It is important for people to understand that accessing child exploitation material, or attempting to access such material, is a serious criminal offence.
